Our client is a charitable Centre founded in 1986; they offer a diverse range of services for homeless young people, families in need and the local community on one site. The Centre enables people to gain the skills and support they need to overcome poverty and homelessness.
The organisation has six principal service packages: residential services for homeless young people; family support; housing and welfare rights advice; employment support; learning (English and digital inclusion); and immigration advice and advocacy.
The Centre takes the Benedictine ethos of their founder seriously, ensuring that they offer a non-judgemental welcome and a stable and safe environment for people in need to seek help and support.
With an annual income in the region of £2.9 million, there are currently 69 staff members. In addition, the Centre benefits from the generous and diverse contribution of volunteers; there are currently some 130 active volunteers.
They are now looking for a Finance Assistant to join the team.
The finance department is responsible for the financial administration of the Centre, ensuring that the Centre’s finances are operated in a professional efficient manner for the benefit of both staff and clients, that the Centre’s resources are safeguarded and used only for appropriate expenditure and that the Centre complies with all relevant laws, regulations and procedures.
To maintain the Centre’s financial integrity and processes carrying out the day to day financial activities of the organisation in an accurate and timely manner.
To maintain the purchase and sales ledgers: recording and raising invoices, ensuring they are appropriately authorised, preparing regular payment runs, resolving any queries and following up overdue invoices and queries with budget holders.
Assisting the Management Accountant with ad hoc queries regarding expenditure in the Centre
Processing expense claims.
Processing the monthly payroll, uploading pensions files and making all relevant payments to HMRC, with oversight from the management accountant.
Managing and reconciling credit card usage with assistance from the management accountant.
To be responsible for the petty cash floats in the Centre, monitoring their use, undertaking fortnightly reconciliations.
Reconciling all cheques and cash received and recording the information in the accounting system.
Performing monthly bank reconciliations.
Preparing weekly banking spreadsheets and making deposits at their branch, and maintaining the bank register on QuickBooks for all their accounts. This includes liaising with all areas currently receiving cash which includes the fundraising department, the shop, the hostel and immigration department and supporting them to ensure that deadlines are met in producing backing document and helping them to ensure documentation is accurate.
To take on responsibility for other tasks as delegated by the Management Accountant or Finance Director.
High level of numeracy and accuracy.
Knowledge and experience of accounts administration.
Good knowledge of Excel to intermediate level.
Organised and structured, particularly in relation to filing information.
Good attention to detail.
Proactive, enthusiastic and flexible.
Strong communication skills with a professional and friendly manner comfortable in relating to people from diverse backgrounds.
Discretion, trustworthiness and able to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to build good relationships with Centre staff in respect of supporting them with financial processes.
An ability to be a supportive and flexible finance team member.
A willingness to learn and help develop the Finance service.
Third level qualification in accounting or finance
Terms and Conditions
Starting salary: up to £30kfte dependent on experience (pro rata for hours worked)
Hours: 21 hours in a 35 hour week
Holidays: Pro-rata of full-time 24 days, rising to 26 after one year’s service, and 28 after two years’ service
Notice Period: 4 weeks
Pension: The Centre provides an auto-enrolment pension scheme and will match employee contributions up to a maximum of 6%.
Probation Period: 6 months A Season Ticket Loan is available.
