Operations Analyst

£35,000–£45,000 + discretionary bonus | Chiswick, West London | 7:30am–3:30pm

Do you love working with data, figuring out why something doesn’t add up and finding a better way to do things?

We’re recruiting an Operations Analyst for a small, successful and values-led financial trading business based in Chiswick.

This could suit someone already working in operations, financial services or analysis, but we’re equally interested in people with strong Excel and data skills who may be coming from finance, accounting, reporting, business analysis or another detail-heavy environment.

It could also be a great opportunity for someone returning to work after a career break.

The role

You’ll join a small Operations team responsible for the processes and data that keep the trading business running smoothly each day.

There is a clear daily rhythm to the role. Certain things need to happen accurately and on time every day, but this isn’t simply about following a process. You’ll be expected to understand why you’re doing something, spot when something doesn’t look right and find ways to make processes quicker and better.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Daily P&L reconciliations and investigating discrepancies when numbers don’t agree
  • Daily reporting and operational processes supporting the trading team
  • Monitoring live P&L and key market alerts
  • Managing trade flows and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Maintaining models, reports and operational data
  • Spotting repetitive or inefficient processes and finding ways to improve or automate them
  • Working closely with Trading and Engineering to resolve problems
  • Translating business requirements into clear information for technical teams
  • Liaising with brokers, vendors and IT support where required

You don’t need previous commodities or trading experience – the business will teach you.

Who could this suit?

You might currently work in:

  • Operations or middle/back office
  • Finance or accounting
  • Reporting or MI
  • Data or analysis
  • Business analysis
  • Financial services
  • A role involving reconciliations, controls or investigating errors

Or you may be returning to work after a career break and looking for an opportunity where your existing skills will be valued.

We’re much more interested in how you think than whether you’ve followed a particular career path.

What you’ll need

You’ll need strong Excel skills and be genuinely comfortable working with data.

You’ll also need fundamental SQL skills – enough to write a basic query, pull data and check it. You don’t need to be an SQL expert, and if you’ve taught yourself the basics and are keen to learn more, that’s absolutely fine.

We’re particularly interested in people who can show us that they:

  • Have worked with data where accuracy really matters
  • Naturally check their own work and spot when something doesn’t look right
  • Enjoy investigating problems and getting to the root cause
  • Have improved or simplified a repetitive process
  • Can explain complicated things simply
  • Are comfortable raising a problem rather than sitting on it
  • Can work autonomously and take ownership
  • Are curious about systems and enjoy figuring out how things work

Experience with VBA/macros, Python, Bloomberg/Reuters, financial services operations, derivatives or Agile ways of working would be useful, but none of these are essential.

Working pattern

Your regular hours will be 7:30am–3:30pm, Monday to Friday.

The Operations and Trading teams work two shifts to cover the UK and US markets, so there may occasionally be a need to cover the later 12pm–8pm shift for holidays or sickness, with notice wherever possible.

You’ll initially spend more time in the Chiswick office while you’re training and getting up to speed. Once you’re able to work autonomously, there is flexibility around working from home or the office. The business cares about output, not presenteeism.

The culture

This is a small business where your contribution will be visible and your ideas will genuinely be heard.

The culture is built around four values:

80/20 – progress over perfection.

Adapt & Evolve – learn, improve and don’t be afraid to get something wrong.

Best Ideas Rise To The Top – the best idea wins, regardless of seniority.

Care Personally – care about the people you work with and the impact your work has on them.

The company trades its own capital rather than managing money for clients or investors. Profit has a wider purpose: investing in businesses around the world that have a positive impact on communities or the planet.

AI and learning

This is also a business that actively encourages its people to use AI to work smarter.

You’ll be encouraged to use AI tools to research, problem-solve, automate and get to answers more efficiently – but you’ll always be expected to understand and take ownership of the work you produce.

You’ll have plenty of opportunity to develop your technical skills, including SQL, Python, automation and broader business analysis.

You’ll also have access to a professionally qualified coach, an experienced Operations Analyst as a mentor, support towards professional qualifications and a book each month for personal development.

Package

  • £35,000–£45,000 depending on relevant experience
  • Annual discretionary performance bonus
  • 39 days’ holiday
  • Hybrid working once you’re fully trained and able to work autonomously
  • Professionally qualified coach
  • Physical health/wellbeing allowance
  • Pension
  • Income protection and life insurance
  • Support for professional qualifications and development

The interview process

The process includes an initial remote conversation followed by an in-person final stage.

The final stage includes a short practical Excel assessment based on the type of work you’d actually be doing. It’s designed to understand your current level rather than catch you out.

If you enjoy data, Excel, solving problems and making processes work better, we’d love to hear from you – even if you don’t tick every box.
