Pregnant then Screwed
Pregnant Then Screwed is the leading charity working to end the motherhood penalty. Founded on International Women’s Day in 2015, our work is rooted in lived experience and delivered with fearless conviction. We campaign for change, provide support and advice, and build community with working parents across the UK. We do this with rigour, rage, and love.
Two days after telling her employer she was pregnant, PTS founder Joeli Brearley was sacked by voicemail. Four months pregnant, out of work and facing a high-risk pregnancy, she felt her career and confidence collapse. Realising her story was far from unique, Joeli launched Pregnant Then Screwed on International Women’s Day 2015. What began as a space for mothers to share their experiences has grown into a national charity that supports tens of thousands of women every year and fights to end the motherhood penalty.
We believe in a world where women are valued not for the contents of their womb or the hours they work – or even the porridge in their hair and smell of Sudocrem – but for their skills and talents. A world where stay-at-home parents are recognised for their contribution, where both parents are encouraged to spend time with their children, and where childcare is free, high-quality and accessible to all. A world where mothers and fathers share the load at home while still pursuing their own ambitions. We believe mothers deserve better – and that by working together, we can and will create change.
